Guess What We Drove This Morning in Sebring.... R8 V12 TDI« »

It’s morning at a retired airport ground that adjoins the Sebring International Raceway. I’m in town for the American Le Mans Series’ 12 Hours of Sebring race, and word from Audi was that we might take a quick spin in their diesel-powered, mid-engined R8 supercar shown just last week in Geneva and planned for display here at the race tomorrow.

You suck beyond belief. I can't wait to see real-world numbers on this thing. 4.2 seconds to 60 my arse.

What's the story with that Papaya RS 4?

Quick math says 400,000 kms is only like 5 miles, I'm not impressed.

damn george my jealousy of you just jumped up 100fold.

one lucky man for sure. 50mph would be enough in that car just to say you drove it.

Unreal!!! I love this car!

Just to see that this prototype was driven already, gives all Diesel fans some hope for actual production.

Awesome story, thanks!

Great pics too, made my day.

I don't think it's Papaya. The car belongs to Audi's Miami VIP fleet and is in town for executive use. It was being driven by one of the Audi AG PR guys.

You know, I'm glad to hear anything I can about the V12 TDI and other great R8 engines in the pipeline, because after driving one myself I found the V8 in the base car barely interesting. But what I really want to know is whether Audi is also working on better transmissions for the car. I'm sure the manual is great if you like that kind of thing, but single-clutch R-tronic is clearly half-baked: actually slower than the manual, which sort of defeats the purpose. Any word on if they are developing a twin-clutch S-tronic sort of box that can handle the high torque of the R8 engines?

I never looked under the hood, but on the exterior it was a silver S-line model being used as a base of operations for the two German techs who were there to take care of any mechanical issues that might arise by running a prototype drivetrain concept on an abandoned airport tarmac in 80 degree weather.

I forget if it was badged 3.0 TDI, 4.2 or whatever, but there were a few 3.0 TDI Q7s floating around at Sebring as well. We drove one down from DC and there were a few more as well.
