RS5 and TTRS Revealed: All We Know about Audi’s RS Coupes | « » 2:35 AM 2/15/2008 | |
|
The R8 may be getting all the press as of late, but Audi’s not done with their growing performance lineup by a longshot. Several weeks ago, quattro GmbH’s director Werner Frowein confirmed to Auto Motor und Sport that his wing of Audi would be stepping up its work for 2008. The current RS 4’s retirement may be imminent, but production of the R8, RS 6 and upcoming Q7 V12 TDI will keep his team busy. So too will new projects, and two of these expected expansion models are the much-anticipated TTRS and RS5 coupes. In the same Auto Motor und Sport piece, Frowein mentioned that the previous brew period of four years into a six year model cycle would shorten to two in the future. RS versions of both the TT and the A5/S5 have both been spotted undergoing testing, and Frowein’s math should put a TTRS on a show stand by as early as Paris in September and an RS5 sometime in 2009. Such a rapid launch plan should mean little sleep for the boys at quattro GmbH. Full Story

Great article - I think I'll take an RS5 with a 2" raise, the blister fenders, and a twin-turbo 2.1 litre version of the TT-RS powerplant.

Das ist aber eine komische mischung... I thought/expect the TT-RS to have at least 2.5L displacement because to get 350HP out of 2.1L, you have to put an insane amount of stress on the engine and that'll hurt reliability. Turbo 4.2 mit 450+ PS ist wesentlich besser

I'd heard 2.3-liters from a friend who's made a few accurate calls to me, so I mentioned it for what it's worth. Audi has, in the past, gone with slightly less displacement (2.8 vs. 2.7T for instance) with the turbo setup, so I mention it. I've heard both, so wanted to put it out there and see if anyone had heard similar.

I think the V10's weight would make the RS5 too nose heavy even if it does fit in the engine bay... my bet is on the 4.2 V8, possibly with a supercharger.

Here are a few things that I am hoping/guessing Audi might do to the TT-RS(Some less likely than others)- I-5 Turbo Likely, to produce at LEAST 380 HP - C6 RS6-Style Widebody - RWD Based Haldex or new Vectoring quattro System - 7 Speed DSG and 6 Speed Manual Transmissions

You know, I think 350 hp is more than enough for a TT (there are only a few cars with that kind of power in a similar size package to the TT), but I'd take the rest of the above.... Audi reeeeeaaally needs to get a vectoring AWD system. That'd rock!

The only reason I said 380 was because the RS4 put out 380 and I didnt think they would put less HP in it than the first RS model, but I totally forgot about ( ) the RS2 which put out 310 hp. I think 350 would be satisfactory.

I don't think they have a 7 speed DSG box that can handle higher torque applications yet. The current literature states the box only handles 184.39 lb. ft. of torque max.PS: I'd love an RS TT my car as I used to drive an old TT 225 and now have a Subaru STi. Unfortunately it will be way out of my price range. It's hard to find cars better for the money these days.

I say 2.1 because that's the displacement of the UrQ/SQ's engine, and the SQ [in production form] made around 310 PS from 2.1 litres. I don't know exactly how Audi would do it, but there's a whole thread in the Ur/SQ fourum that discusses twin-turbo/biturbo setups on I-5s. Or perhaps twincharging. http://forums.fourtitude.com/zerothread?id=3574831

That's for longitudinal applications, not transverse like the TT or A3.
