The Volkswagen Group recently released the below copy highlighting the capabilities of the newly announced 7-speed transverse DSG. The existing 6-speed version is currently available in Audi A3 and TT models as the 'S-Tronic' transmission. This new 7-speed is applicable to these models and likely the upcoming compact model that will spawn from the recent Metroproject quattro concept car.
My guy at the dealership told me that all of AoA's automatic transmissions would be DSG by 2011/2012. Not surprising as DSG is the best automatic out there!
FYI 5.9Liters is 1.55 gallons and 100kilometeres is 62.1 miles 41.33 miles per gallon
now just bring this tranny to the longitudinal engines and we are golden.

That would be a very expensive mod - probably $4-5K+.
Also, even though it's lighter, has an extra gear, will get you better fuel economy and probably last longer due to the dry clutch...I'd never swap for this simple reason:
"250 Newton-meter is the maximum torque of engines that are paired with Volkswagen’s 7-speed DSG
350 Newton-meter is the maximum torque of engines that are paired with Volkswagen’s 6-speed DSG"
Anyone here with a chipped 2.0T would probably stay away this tranny until they beefed it up a bit...
