Independent Design Focus: Audi A2 by Design Student Luis Camino | « » 6:59 PM 10/19/2006 | |

Design is a paramount tenet of the Audi brand, and given its success in that field, it’s no surprise that many independent designers and design students choose Audi as the subject of their projects. With that in mind, Fourtitude is beginning an ongoing series of articles focusing on an independent take on Audi design. Designers and students outside of Audi’s numerous design studios offer an interesting slant, sometimes but not always different from Audi’s own corporate design language. As the first subject of this series, we take a look at design student Luis Camino and his approach to the much-rumored Audi A1. Full Story

Wow George--this series is one of the most impressive and interesting things I've ever seen on an automotive forum. Well done!

Thanks man. I think it fits the Audi brand, and automotive design fascinates me. Unfortunately, the car design mags are both very expensive and very hard to find. Gotta love the Internet though as you can find designers with relative ease.

Looks good from what I see, and I'm not big on short, (typically ugly) econoboxes. At least the original A2 still looked like an Audi. Know why we didn't get these here( first gen. A2)? It looked better that the Scion, and was probably cheeper, if not, then slightly more expensive( hey, it's aluminum, after all, unlike a Trabant, which was rumored to be made of cardboard, but the body was actually cheaply made fiberglass).

If you're really interested in auto design in general, I strongly recommend Car Design News: http://www.cardesignnews.com/ It's probably the best site on the Internet for general design discussion. Unfortunately, it costs $130/yr to belong. One of the things I really like in this A2 design, BTW, is the ovoid grille that was carried over from the old Auto Union racers. I'm really NOT a fan of Audi's current grille design theme--I don't feel it has the brand "integrity" (for lack of a better word) of the more vintage grille, and I think the beauty really showed with the Rosemeyer concept. Oh, and wow--I just looked at your Fourtitude galleries to find a picture of the Rosemeyer, and I never realized what a resource you'd built there.

chernaudi - original A2 was never designed for US crash regulations. Additionally, being made of aluminum, it cost more than the A3. This all combined in the car being so misunderstood, that it wasn't even a sales success in Europe. Sad, as I liked it very much.

Thanks on the galleries. It's been a pet project of mine since launch, and I've been trying hard to make it as conclusive as possible. I think it'll always be a work in progress. I'm so geeky about it, I even buy old press kits off of ebay from time to time. It's an afliction, but one with a positive result. Anyway, I am with you 100% on the Auto Union grille. While I like the current Audi grille, I think that the design would be so much cooler with more of that aggressive Rosemeyeresque grille. That may be the direction of the Audi design evolution. I know da Silva has said that the cross bar is going away. The next move is to go more in that direction... at least from my perspective.

At least with the A2, you got something with more umph than the stupid Trabant. And with out bodywork that was made out of cardboard reinforced fiberglass. I'd take the most beat up, gutless Audi over a Lada( can't believe that they still make those steamin' piles of crap!) and a Trabant( a car that for sure wouldn't pass crash test any where outside of the former Communist Bloc. I saw one on a "Havoc" racing crash video just tink another car, and the whole front disentigrated!). That should make Audi A2 owners happy!
