Project A3 DSG: APR Exhaust Upgrade | « » 1:15 AM 9/30/2005 | |
|
There comes a time when a project car really starts rolling. Parts start arriving for installation and a real noticeable gain can be seen in the performance of the car. Up until now the A3 has been sporting some nice OEM+ and custom touches but for its next move, something more drastic and performance-oriented was needed. Research for improvement of the A3’s performance began back in May when the car was first purchased. Being a new model to the US, there weren’t many performance upgrades to choose from for the A3. Now some things were available through special shipment from Europe, but much of the upgrades now becoming available weren’t yet readily found at that time. Full Story

the exhaust sounds very impressive and doesnt really drone on when cruising at highway speeds. at some speeds and RPMs, I don't even know it is on the car.

1)Is it a deeper sound or more raspy? 2)Any chance you could make a sound clip Brian? 3)Any clue as to the release date? 4)What Variant KW is the car equiped with?

looks really nice, that should help the performance out with a lot more exhaust flow by eliminating that pancake muffler in the back.

1. its deeper. think of a subaru WRX sound, but with more class and not as lound. thats the only think i can somewhat relate it to. 2. will work on that this weekend. 3.no clue on release date. that is up to APR 4.they are KW's but you'll will have to wait for that article.

I've had extensive hands on with Project A3 and I can tell you so far this car is Awesome!! the exhaust the chip Now that it has the proper stance (pats self on back) it's a fantastic car. I may buy one and slap some Sportec's on it About the exhaust specifically: Almost no cabin noise or resonation To your average Audi customer it may be a little loud when your not riding in the car.. but most A3 buyers are probably VW customers stepping up in the world so they should have no problem with the noise.. I will say this- ditch the dual tips for a nice classy Oval tip with a rolled lip and suck it in a bit.. YOU HEAR ME APR!!

Did you ask about pricing? I'd love to get a milltek but $900 is a lot just for a catback. Dave

The one pictured and being installed on Brians car is not turbo back, just cat back. If APR's turbo back is $1200 I would be amazed considering milteks turbo and cat alone is $1100, and full system comes in at @ $2K.

the one on my car is a full 3" turbo back system. the picture above isnt the complete system. Here are the pictures from the gallery of the full system. I can assure you it bolted right up to the turbo.

271 at the wheels is amazing... but with that much power I'd be seriously worried about too much wheel slip and torque steer. When I took an A3 for a test drive a couple months back I noticed that even stock it was not difficult to induce some wheel spin at launch - I was driving the 6MT and part of it was my fault because the clutch on the A3 has a really fast grab compared to my B5 Passat. Anyways, I can't imagine what nearly an extra 100hp would be like. But damn... those are pretty impressive numbers. That 2.0T is amazing.

I"d be more concerned with realistic numbers then wheel spin and torque steer. Think about it. Currently with a chip they are claiming about 250 at the crank. which is about 220whp... So if they were really seeing 270 at the wheels tht would be 50whp from the exhaust. Now I've had a full custom turbo back on my car for about 4 months now. I had the pleasure of doing some testing of it chipped this weekend along with the exhaust on my car and also another car with stock exhaust and same chip.. Sorry but there was not a 50whp difference between the two nor was my car close to 270whp.. Possibly with higher octane fuel in the car would greater numbers be possible but 270whp is very optomistic.. This turbo is tiny and it can't push that much boost up top so it would all have to be from timing which is where the fuel would come in... Possibly then just maybe... but thats certainly pushing it.

True... perhaps they meant 270 at the crank ... which is more realistic. Still, that's a lot of HP and pretty impressive. Assuming you're running similar numbers, how is the car handling the power? Any trouble with wheel slip or torque steer?

I only had mine chipped for a day since it was a beta file and they did not want it out there yet. For the few hours I was playing with it and we were logging it was fine. it will spin the tires like any high powered FWD car if you want.. or if you know what you are doing they will stay firmly planted and off you go. Torque steer.. I'm not sure what that is anymore I learned to drive powerful FWD cars years ago I don't even notice it, autmoatic reflex to correct it.

Its some sort of triple K/ borger Warner turbo. They are saying its a KO3 variant but that could mean anything as K03 does ot specify wheel sizes or anything. To make the power it is the wheels are probably on par with those of the 225TT and the RS4. Hopefully have some measurements later this week.

the car handles the power great. Even using the paddles and coming off of corners in 1st and 2nd gear there is no torque steer at all. ESP of course will kick in if i do not turn it off. But compared to my 20th AE, this electromechanical steering is so much smoother and nicer. I am going to autoX the car this sunday. So we shall see how that goes. I will bring my cone-cam and get video and sound from that.

Chris, I think the person on the phone misquoted our engineers, 270 crank is what we have seen. Unlike the 1.8T these engines require a totally different tune when you install a turbo back exhaust. You will see no real improvement when you just add an exhaust (like you have maybe noticed Chris). Thats why we created also for the A3 a program that takes full benefit of our exhaust. Currently APR is the only company who has also for the A4 B7 the program switching, as well as some nifty little features that will help you with your next dealer visit.
