 Project 4KQ: Introduction« »

It all started with a photo.

In 1989, I was a pimply-faced eighteen-year old cruising the mall for chicks. Pitting into the bookstore, I did the normal scoping of car magazines and on the way out of the store, I spotted a book on the sale shelf – the now out of print "quattro – The Development & Competition History”. I’d always lusted after the Ur-Quattro, so I picked up the book for all of $10 and continued my search for a teenage target looking fine in her Jordache jeans.

Back at home, I found myself reading my new quattro book instead of the texts dictated in my highschool syllabus. In addition to thinking Michele Mouton was one hot number (also a very talented driver, as my wife would be quick to add), my eighteen-year old eyes spotted a random photo on page 217 of the tomb – that of an 80 quattro with the “tarmac look”.

Great start! You've addressed some of my ideas/suggestions. In a time where so many seem to prefer cheap, oversized aftermarket wheels and the like giving little regard to original design, it is nice to know that there are others still sensitive to upgrading while not altering the overall look/theme/style too much.

This article was the first I'd heard the term "OEMplus", but it describes my preferences to a "T".

It's fun to go to shows and see the wild and outrageous, but it is those (sometimes) heavily upgraded rides that have done so with style, taste, and respect for the original intention of the designer that really stand out.

It will be exciting to follow this project, George.

As for the brakes, you can use the 280 mm brakes from the S2. They are identical to the brakes from the 90q20V, except for the bolt pattern. While the RS2 used bigger brakes (322 mm, if my memory dont fail me), the RS2 is a heavier car than the 84, so I believe that the 280 mm brakes should suffice. The benefit of going for these brakes is that you are able to fit 15" wheels over them.

Funny you should photoshop a notchback urquattro though, IIRC there was a 4-door urquattro made in Germany in the early 80s. I believe it was made by Artz, a tuner most known for the 928 powered Rabbit, and also the Urquattro wagon. Of course, it probably was an 80 quattro that was fitted with the wide fenders of the urquattro, the difference was that it also sported the rear end known from the Coupe GT and Urquattro. Now, if only I could find a picture, I cant remember whether I saw it on the web or in a book...

Good info on the brakes Per. Thanks.

As for the photoshop, it was close for not spending a whole lot of time on it. I've seen some 4000 or 80s / 90s with UrQ fenders, but no two-doors thus far. The other funny thing I was thinking was reversing (if possible) the idea and doing a 5-door on the CGT profile... an oldschool sportback if you will. Thing is, the swap would be nowhere near as simple as a two-door conversion to the sedan, but while I'm dreaming, why not dream big right?

OEM plus is a movement getting pretty popular on VWvortex. It makes sense though, and follows the Feng Shui philosophy of cars I guess.

So what do you call the oldschool RS? Historical Fiction

My denim reference is probably incorrect. Maybe I should change it.

The UrQ wagon:

I prefer the sedan/notchback profile, but you know this wouldn't be hard to build, at least as a 4-door. Take one quantum Syncro and add the front clip of a 4000. The taillights look similar to that of the UrQuattro, so if it were a direct replacement, that'd be even cooler.

Revisionist History, I like that.

Maybe "Revisionist Vintage"

I can't wait to see progress reports. Looks like a great car to start with. The 84 4kq is F'n hot! My pick would be the OEM plus look, but thats just me. Your gonna get in real deep tryin to make a 2 door.
