I put them next to the stock ones, and the intake cam looks fine. The exhaust cam seems WAY too far off for a mild set of cams (3651s)
Check it out, look at the lobe of cylinder #1

So even if I just put the intake cam in, how the hell would I time it, the f*cking sprockets are OFF.

On mine I thought the exhaust was fine, but the intake was off..
I think that I may have an issue with the phasing for the gears on the chain side.
I'll take pictures of the cams on a spare head this weekend when I'm back in town..

| Not sure why these issues have come up with the cats...I got my 3651 cast catcams from Bob over 3 years ago without issues. |

| So these were the cams that I could not get to run on that one blue GLI I built. These cams are going in my car, I just turned them down to clear the chain. I am putting my car back together, and I need someone to comfirm if this is f*cked up or not, pleae. I put them next to the stock ones, and the intake cam looks fine. The exhaust cam seems WAY too far off for a mild set of cams (3651s) Check it out, look at the lobe of cylinder #1

Hi , this is common.
For the guys that dont remember what cat was like in 2000-2005 for the VR6.
This have happen on MANY cat cams.
we had to machine a bunch back in da days due to that stupid slot being missplaced on some of the stuff we recived
Nothing new...nothing strange....just cat cams
But they seem to have shaped up before they created the 1.8T cams

well that sure is a blanket statement Issam.. Do you say this because it is what you sell, and you make a nice profit on them? What about Schrick, or Kent cams? Have you ever experimented with other camshafts? I have never heard of a cam manufacturer having qc problems like this. With this type of qc. I wouldn't even be confident that the advertised lift and duration are correct.. |
well what do you run in your car??

In my 90 Corrado G60 I used a Neuspeed 260 cam
In my 92 16v I ran Auto tech assymetrical cams
In my 92 16v after I swapped a G60 into it I used a Schrick cam in it.
In my 95 Corrado Vr6 I ran a set of ABT cams, then switched to Kent Cams.. The Kents idled just as good as the ABT's but had a thicker powerband..
I've been playing with these cars since 1995 bro.. I didn't run Cams in my 98 A4 Quattro , but did many other mods over time, including a 2871rs a year or two before I sold it 3 yrs ago. Owned the Audi since new, sold it with 176,000 miles on it. My 2001 Jetta I have also driven since new, and now have put over 200,000 on the clock. I have owned 15 VW's and Audis and modified 12 of them. Most of the work was done by yours truly. I never had a QC issue with cams... Ever... These Cats may be good.. When they are actually to spec.. But they are throwing junk out there right now..
Vegeta GTI.. What experience do you have?? I'm curious.. FYI.. Don't look at the date next to a guys name and assume he's a newb.. I am not.. This is my third screen name since I've been on here the past 3 yrs.. Never bothered with the internet too much before that.

I am not sure if anyone here will know of Revolver camshafts (oem cams reground) but people had issues with those.
Schrick cams are $2000USD+ and take over 6 weeks to get.
Autotech does not make 1.8T 20V cams allthough they have been working on them for 9 years now.
Kent - sure if you dont mind paying $1000+ for a set and the same goes for Piper.
Right now the 1.8T forum has 2 options for READILY AVAILABLE camshafts:
* STOCK
* CAT
If there was another camshaft that was affordable and readily available,I will happily test and provide it to my customers but there isnt so my statement still stands.
Both myself & Bob do take care of the quality control issues presented here and its not like people buying these cams are left in the dark.If you send me an email with respect to this issue then you are dealt with as swift as possible.

DEGREE WHEEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Exactly
What is the problem?
A degree wheel has to be used anyway, soooo
Post Title: Re: Another Cat Cams Thread... Screwed up! (NORSK)

Of course, the slot could have been made in a more precise location, but who cares since a degree wheel has to be used anyway.

Even though i don't look at a degree wheel as a very specialized tooling.
I got like 3 or 4 wheels, and use them all the time.
Personally,i can't understand how people can build an engine without this "specialized tool"
But maybe that's just me

(It's impossible without custom tooling)

It's not the degree wheel that is specialized, it's the way to be able to put a dial indicator onto the lifter buckets on a 20v. ![]()
|
Coat hanger wire is maybe some of the specialized tools
That is what i am using on the 1.8t anyway
Costs like...... 1usd
