      https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/n...ially-revealed

The fast and affordable junior Volkswagen hot hatch is back – and with 113bhp, the new Up GTi packs more power than the original Golf GTi.

Set for UK sale in early 2018 at an expected starting price around £15,000 following a planned public premiere at next week's GTi fan meet at Lake Woerthersee in Austria, the latest member of what Volkswagen officials recently suggested to Autocar will become a larger and more prominent line-up of powered-up GTi models in future years arrives well into the latter half of the first-generation Up’s planned seven year life cycle, providing the German car maker with its first serious rival to the likes of the Fiat 500 Abarth and Vauxhall Adam Unlimited.

Developed in a joint project between Volkswagen’s regular road car department and its high performance R division, the new model is described as being very much in the spirit of the original GTi, with an upgraded engine, greater downforce at the rear and a revised suspension claimed to see it rise well above regular Up models in outright performance and handling terms.

With 113bhp on tap at 5000rpm from a turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder direct injection petrol engine, the Up GTi’s peak power is a significant 30bhp down on the turbocharged 1.4-litre four-cylinder petrol engine of the Abarth 595 but the very same output as the similarly configured turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine used by the Adam Unlimited.

With a kerb weight of 997kg, this provides it with a power-to-weight ratio of 113.3bhp/tonne. It is backed up by 147lb ft of torque between 2000 and 3500rpm.

To give this some historical perspective, the original first generation Golf GTi launched in 1976 ran a naturally-aspirated multi-point fuel injected 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine delivering 108bhp. But with a kerb weight of 810kg, it packed a sharper 133.3bhp per tonne, despite only being endowed with 104lb ft of torque.

Volkswagen is talking up the technical specification of the Up GTi’s engine, which also resides in the entry level version of the recently facelifted seventh-generation Golf. Along with a stop/start and energy recuperation system, it receives a particulate filter that enables the compact three-cylinder to meet the new WLTP (Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure) emission standard.

A further development adopted by the new range topping Up model is a so-called sound actuator. It provides a synthetically generated exhaust note aimed at enhancing the aural qualities of the 999cc unit.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a closely stacked six-speed manual gearbox. Volkswagen claims a 0-62mph time of 8.8sec and a top speed of 122mph. This compares to a respective 0-62mph time and top speed for the original Golf GTi of 9.0sec and 113mph.

The Up GTI also receives a retuned MacPherson strut (front) and torsion beam (rear) suspension with unique spring and damper rates, as well as a 15mm reduction in ride height over existing Up models.

A series of stylistic upgrades transforms the look of the Up, providing it with many of the classic GTi cues used by Volkswagen down through the years.

Included is a new front bumper with additional cooling vents – including one integrated into a splitter element long its lower edge, round fog lamps with cornering light function and a plastic honeycomb grille insert. Above it is a GTi badge and characteristic horizontal red feature line in the space between the headlamps.

Also included are GTi badges within the trailing section of front fenders, adhesive stripes along the lower section of the doors, high gloss black exterior mirror caps, standard 17-inch “Brands Hatch” design wheels, red painted front brake calipers.

At the rear, there’s a uniquely styled spoiler atop the tailgate together with a redesigned bumper featuring an altered valance within its lower section housing a single round chromed tailpipe. As at the front, there is also a GTi badge and red feature line within the lower section of the tailgate.

Along with the three-door version pictured here, Volkswagen has confirmed the Up GTi will also be available in five-door guise from the start of UK sales.

Buyers can choose between five exterior colours: Tornado Red, Pure White, Dark Silver, Black Pearl and, new to the GTi line-up, Costa Azul. With the exception of Black Pearl, the new Volkswagen will also be available with an optional contrasting black roof.

Inside, there is a unique “red pixel” trim within the dashboard, plaid check fabric upholstered front seats, a black roof liner, a multi-function flat bottom steering wheel with red stitching along with number of unique touches, including GTi insignias within the sill panels, a black leather bound handbrake lever and GTi identification within the gear knob, albeit without the classic golf ball optic of the original.

Among the standard equipment for the new Volkswagen model is a Composition infotainment system with six-speakers, a USB interface, air conditioning, heated seats as well as electrical adjustable and heated exterior mirrors and the aforementioned fog lamps with so-called static cornering lights.

      Engine Turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol Power 113bhp at 5000rpm Torque 147lb ft at 2000rpm Kerb weight 997kg Power to weight 113.3bhp/tonne 0-62mph 8.8sec Top speed 122mph Length 3600mm Width 1641mmmm Height 1489mm

If I needed a proper city car and didn't want to try a non VAG brand just to have something different (used to have a Golf GTI), this would be it.

About the same power to weight as the original miata, with a lot more torque. Seems like a fun little car. I'm sure a tune could up the power a bit too.

Didn't see the word "Up" in the title, just saw GTi, clicked the thread, looked at the pictures...confusion sets in...

      Ugh. Lazy.

I like the mk1 stripes on the bottom edge, though.

This is just a "concept" technically, but it's basically exactly what is going on sale next year.

      Press release:

World premiere of a new GTI: up! GTI is a tribute to the original GTI

DNA of an icon: the concept of the 115 PS up! GTI follows the genetic heritage of the first Golf GTI (110 PS)
Festival highlight: world premiere of the up! GTI concept car at the legendary GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee (24 to 27 May)
The production version of the 197 km/h up! GTI will be launched into the market early next year

A circle closes 41 years after the debut of the first Golf GTI: at this year's GTI Meet at Lake Wörthersee (24 to 27 May), Volkswagen is presenting a compact, sporty car very much in the spirit of the original GTI – the new up! GTI. The concept and power output of the 85 kW / 115 PS up! are broadly in line with the Golf GTI MkI presented in 1976 that had 81 kW / 110 PS. The near-production concept car pays tribute to this icon – with compact dimensions, a low weight, a powerful engine, sports running gear and the typical insignia of a GTI (including red stripes in the radiator grille, seat covers in "clark" tartan pattern). This sporty small car will certainly bring a new dimension of driving fun to the compact class. A typical GTI feature is the sophisticated sports running gear. It gives the car the agility akin to that of a go-kart, yet it also offers a high level of comfort. The production version of the up! GTI will be launched into the market in early 2018.

With the up! GTI, Volkswagen is building a bridge that spans four decades: when the first GTI was launched in the 1970s it democratised access to fast roads around the world – especially the overtaking lane of German motorways. Where large saloons and expensive sports cars had previously set the pace, the new compact Volkswagen suddenly stirred up the field. The red stripe in the radiator grille, the black double stripes across the side sills and behind, the black stripe on the tailgate immediately identified this Volkswagen as a GTI. Its 110 PS powered a kerb weight of just 810 kg and accelerated it to 100 km/h in 9.0 seconds. Top speed: 182 km/h. The colours for the market launch: "mars red" and "diamond silver". Later, white and black also became established as GTI colours.

The new up! GTI continues the creed of the lightweight and no-frills sports car with a compact format – from outside and inside similar in size to the original GTI. It is driven by a turbocharged engine (TSI) with powerful 230 Nm torque. The key data do indeed read like a Golf GTI MkI catapulted into the present day. Weight: 997 kg (significantly high-strength steels and more airbags). Vmax: 197 km/h. 0-100 km/h: 8.8 seconds. Colours: classic once again and typical of the GTI – the plain colours "tornado red" and "pure white" and the metallic colours "dark silver", "black pearl" and – as a new GTI colour – "costa azul" (blue).

The most powerful up! to date is immediately recognisable with its typical GTI insignia. At the front for instance the red stripe across the radiator grille with honeycomb pattern. Integrated above it is the GTI logo. Here the up! cites the archetypal GTI with features such as the double stripes across the wide side sill panels. The exterior mirror caps are in high-gloss black; the 17-inch alloy wheels have also been completely redesigned. They have a particularly dashing look in the wheel housings because the up! GTI features sports running gear, lowering the body by 15 mm. GTI features also characterise the rear: here, among other things, a red strip as well as a larger roof edge spoiler provides for greater downforce on the rear axle for optimised handling performance at higher speeds. The interior includes features as a leather-trimmed sport steering wheel, a GTI gear knob and the legendary "clark" seat pattern. The fact is: this GTI does not just look like one – it also drives like one. A new original.

Hang on a sec, so is VW officially ditching a NAV option/fancy MMI type pop up screen for a proper cell phone holder/integration to car systems? Actually that's pretty awesome.

Only the Up has the cell phone integration.

Anyway, since when has VW had a pop-up screen or MMI?

Forgive the terminology, I'm driving an A6 now so that's what I'm used to saying. Main point being a big screen of any kind w/an interface of any kind.

Absolutely would drive. This or the Polo. Both would be hysterically fun and much closer to the much-loved FiST and R53/56 MCS.

Audi has MMI but I don't think their screen pop-up anymore. VW have big screens but they don't have MMI and don't pop-up.

Point being. Big screens are here to stay. The Up is a small and cheap car and VW wanted a cheap infotainment solution for it.

      Great comparison through.

      It won't.

I love the idea of this although VW should have turned up the boost just a tiiiny bit.
Oh and given it a center exhaust like the Mk5/6 Golf R.

Silly question, but what does the up! use for center air vents? I know it's not exactly a minivan interior, but there's that nice big windshield to let the sun in...
