I am looking at buying a new Passat with the 24V VR6, since we're doing the buyback on our TDI and I don't think that the 1.8 TSI engine is going to develop enough torque to satisfy us. What sort of fuel is permissible to run in these engines?

In a brand-new US market Passat you can run 87-octane, but you'll notice in VW's publications the horsepower and torque ratings are "achieved with premium fuel".

So you can use regular but you'll get the best performance with premium.

One other thing to keep in mind is that when you use regular your combustion temperatures will be lower (the ECU will retard timing to prevent pinging with lower octane fuels), which could lead to faster carbon buildup on the intake valves since heat is the only thing that burns those oil deposits off.

Also the hpfp likes the additive package that comes with premium fuel. Maybe you could run Lucas fuel treatment and low octane?

If you are harping on fuel costs I can tell you the VR6 isn't for you. It's an engine people buy for the music and grunt it produces not its 20-25 mpg.

Maybe you should look for a new discounted 2015 TDI? I saw a Jetta wagon listed for $15k
