      Sad to say but I have suffered a cam follower failure because I didn't realize that they were an issue. Now I need to buy a new intake cam, HPFP, follower and I might as well do the cam chain and tensioner while I am in there. My question is this, where are the best deals for parts that are quality without having to go to the stealership? Any and all info is greatly appreciated before hand. Also, is there anywhere that rents the tools instead of having to buy them?

      Would you replace the head or just the parts?

      Come on guys, I need some advice here.

      I wouldn't replace the head. Just the parts you have listed and maybe a few others. What year and mileage is your car? While you have everything torn apart you may as well do a carbon cleaning. Do you have any other CEL codes? Thermostats are a common failure - I'd replace that if you have the intake manifold off during the carbon cleaning. Definitely timing belt and water pump since you'll have it off anyway. Make sure your PCV valve is the latest revision. Check your brake booster hoses to see if they are cracked and replace them if they are.

      Do you plan on doing this work yourself?

      I changed the timing belt, water pump and all pulleys 20,000 miles ago. I did not do the thermostat because of the pain it would be. The car is an 07 with 122,000 miles and is still in good shape. The only CEL I have is the P0340 for the cam position sensor which was changed and the CEL came right back. That's the reason I dug into the timing part wondering if the intake cam jumped time because of a faulty tensioner, which is still intact surprisingly. The HPFP is gone, the retainer piece that holds the spring on is gone and the spring was in 2 pieces and was found in the timing cover.

      Have you confirmed that the valves did not make contact with the pistons?

      I did perform a compression test and a leak down test, they both proved to be good. The compression was 200psi on 2 cylinders and 189psi on the other 2, no leakdown.

      Well, that is a loaded question to some degree, lol. In thirty-five years of driving all sorts of vehicles I have never owned one that has had as many issues.

      Regarding the cam follower issue I really have not had any problems since then with the exception of occasional poor mileage that I am guessing may be related to the cam adjuster control valve which is an easy fix on top the engine. I think I am around 135k miles now with one side of me arguing that I should simply cut my losses on the next big fix while the other side argues that I have fixed so damn much over the past few years there should not be anything more to fix!

      Now I found that the one of the oil control rings is broke, any idea on a way to cheaply fix it?

      Those are the crazy fragile plastic rings? If so you can purchase them separately but be careful, they are brittle and snap like there is no tomorrow. Did I mention they break easy?

      Yep, found them yesterday and ordered them right away.

      Would you happen to have a cam timing tool you would rent me? I hate the fact of having to buy one and more than likely use it only once. I would pay for all shipping back and forth.
