      2019 Hyundai Veloster Spy Shots

Hyundai engineers have started evaluating a test mule for a new generation of the Veloster.

The new mechanicals are hidden beneath the modified body of the current Veloster, meaning the final design will be very different to what you see here.

The modifications made to the body, such as the stretched wheel arches at the front, point towards a longer wheelbase.

We can also see that the current Veloster’s headlights barely fit the new structure, and at the rear we can see the actual exhaust tips exit near the sides of the bumper instead of at the center as on the current model.

Not much is known about the new model, though we’ve heard Hyundai may ditch the odd three-door layout and go with two doors instead, making the car a proper coupe. In this way the new Veloster could serve as a replacement for the Genesis Coupe whose successor will no longer be part of the Hyundai range.

In the powertrain department, the base option will likely be a version of the turbocharged 1.6-liter 4-cylinder found in the current Veloster Turbo. Above this could be a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that Hyundai is developing for its new N range of performance cars.

A 295-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter engine was shown in Hyundai’s recent RM16 N concept car (shown above), a concept that may hint at the styling we can expect on the new Veloster.

Development is still in the early stages so we’re not expecting a debut until sometime in 2018. That means we should see the new Veloster arrive as a 2019 model.

I'm glad to see they're working on a new version.
Sporty Coupes and hatches are a very fickle market, and I was concerned they would kill it off.
Does the current one sell well?

This was a prior potential candidate (I ended up with a Volvo C30). That 2nd door on the passenger side was just too weird for me - I couldn't wrap my brain around it.

I'm a little surprised to see that there will be a second-gen. Two doors will be less unique but certainly more successful, I bet.

I see them all the time around here. There are atleast 2-3 within 10 miles of me that are painted in that awful matte blue that looks like a wrap.

Edit: just checked and they sold 1700 in June, and 13,000 so far YTD which is a little better than the GTI. These things sell quite well for such a weird hatchback

All i have to add is that i just had one as a rental this weekend........what a terrible car. I was kicking myself for not sticking to Nissan Sentra like previous weekends rental. Granted im sure it was a base model but geez it was lacking power big time. Gear box was terrible and jerky. Little better if you just kept it in Sport mode but even then it was terrible.
Seating position was actually decent and with more power i can see it being fun. But never again will i pick one as a rental.

There's a guy or girl who frequents my gym with one these in matte bronze. I'm not sure if it's wrapped, but it looks awesome.

This is the only <$50,000 car with factory matte paint I believe. I doubt most people heed the advice not to take it through automatic car washes though, so looking forward to seeing a 10 year old example.

Mercedes offers matte paint on their lesser models like the CLA and GLC.

Oddly in my neighborhood near Las Vegas they are very popular with the 50+ crowd. I see a lot of "Older Gentlemen" that I would normally expect to drive a Mustang driving these. Always the turbo model.

That and the long warranty plus not being known for unreliability.
Oh... and under 20k and somewhat practical and still looks unique.

wife has one she likes it, so that is really all that matters since i cant stand it, small, loud, harsh ride, lack of power, but the 3 door thing makes loading the back easier and the rear hatch is surprisingly big, but the 6 speed manual is decent to row through so it has that, the gas mileage is awesome since she drives 120 miles a day for work. and brand new with a 100k mile warranty for 18.5k was nice. we have had it 3 years it has 70kmiles on it and has never had an issue.
