The year was 1994. As I was thumbing through a magazine at the book store, I came across and advertisement for something which I'd obsess over for the next 21 years.

Several Rovers have come and gone, but they were always too beat up or simply too expensive.

Last Saturday morning, my younger brother begged me to chauffeur him and buddies to LAX for a 10am flight to Ireland. While waiting for them walk to my car, I entered my usual CL search for 95 LWBs. "Holy sh*t!" I yelled out. The perfect car was waiting for me in Orange County, but surely it would be gone before I made it down there. It had been listed the night before, which gave others a head start on me.

After driving like I've never driven before, I raced up the 210, 110 and 105 like an F1 champ. After dropping them off at the terminal, I sped down the 405 hoping for an understanding CHP officer should I get pulled over. As I approached the buy-here-pay-here lot, my palms began to sweat, my heart raced and I thought "is today going to be the day?"

      Yes, yes it was.

The truck was glistening with the usual bath of tire shine, most of which had pooled on the concrete. To my surprise, the paint was immaculate- as was the body. Knowing we didn't have much time before other potential buyers showed up, I asked to take it for a drive. As we were pulling out, the salesman said "oh, the other buyer finally arrived with his mechanic..." I knew this would turn into a bidding war as the truck was priced with $5-7k too low.

After testing the brakes, tranny, AC and other problem spots, I convinced him to let me pull over and inspect the truck for 20 minutes. It all checked out, so I offered to buy it on the spot (pending the carfax) with a discount for the inoperable window, bubbling tint and lack of remote keyfob. We agreed on getting me out the door for asking price.

After I returned, there were three people waiting for us, ready to look over the truck. I quietly walked inside and bought the vehicle while the other buyers looked it over. I must've rustled a few jimmies as one guy had paid his mechanic to inspect the vehicle. He wasn't too happy when I announced that I'd bought it and had to go. The dealer said to him "you said you'd be here by ten, it's 11am. I'm sure one of the other buyers was picking it up just to flip.

There are two spots of corrosion on the vehicle; under the rear hatch, which is expected and one spot on the firewall. The previous owner spent a lot on maintenance over the years and most recently painted the TWR wheels in matte black, which I'm not too fond of. The headliner is brand new, as are the Pirelli Scorpion tires. The EAS has been replaced with coil springs, but they're too low for my taste.

As for the usual RRC issues, there are only a couple. The power seats actually work (gasp!) but I'm going to pull the modules apart and make sure they're sound anyway. The only electrical gremlins are the inoperable drivers window and the rear view mirror, which seems to be frozen on the dimmest setting.

      The plans for now are:

      • Install OEM Cyclone wheels (sourced some with Mint Michelin XMS 244s already)
      • Install new Mudflaps
      • Install Terra Firma 2" lift
      • Retrim the seats in Black or OEM Sable Brown leather
      • Black carpet
      • Black Alcantara headlining
      • Black seatbelts
      • Cover any other unobtanium trim with black SEM color coat
      • Front brush guard
      • Remove '90s-fabulous purple window tint
      • PDR three small dimples in the quarter panels
      • Replace side reflectors with EU-spec turn signal repeaters
      • Half clear turn signals/sidelights
      • I'm torn between TruckLites LED headlights or Hella E-codes with citylights
      • Change out Hamon/Kardon speakers for something newer.

      So much room for activities!

The only rough part of the interior is the drivers' seat, which is better than 75% of the ones I've seen.

The entire engine has been finished in what I call "Delta Rockwell Green," which reminds me of my father's woodshop.

After 21 years, I finally have my own poster. Now I just need to find that Arena Red 993TT

That's clean, I'll give you that.

There's more rear legroom than the 2nd-gen.

      They sure are.
Clean classics, especially the 95 "softdash" LWBs are appreciating. A similar truck with the same mileage on ebay sold for $15k. Examples with under 100K are close to $20k now.

Drove mine off the lot for under 3 stacks. First time I've purchased a car with my credit card.

I know those switching locos.. See them all over the place on the UP lines south of downtown near where I work.

Good find on the soft dash classic, especially in LWB trim. Looks like you've found a unicorn. LMK if you want to take the truck out and play in the dirt. I try to get out into the sticks at least once a month.

      Congrats!

My 95 LWB carried me everywhere and anywhere.

If it doesn't look like this in a few weeks, your doing DIW:

I'm a big proponent of the skid plate for the steering rack. Its the only vulnerable area offroad.

As far as headlights, I swapped mine for a set of ecodes from a Benz 123.

That engine color is so gentlemanly.

Just get some taller springs, a set of 235/85R16's, some diff guards, and have an LT230 transfer case on deck for when the BW chain drive case takes a dump and you will be set. Does the rear driveshaft have the guibo/rotoflex coupler between it and the rear diff? If so you should also look into swapping it out for a 4 bolt flange and a non rotoflex driveshaft.

Kidding aside, that's a pretty awesome truck. Looking forward to updates.

Friend of mine has a Morgan Plus 8 which has the same engine (his even has the same 4.2 intake manifold...) so I have some experience with it. I get the feeling those engines last forever.
