Google Maps was wrong. It doesn't take 41 minutes, it only takes 26 minutes. Holy carp that road was fun!

We have a new hire, she's being groomed to be my second in command.

I'm not sure if she's just naturally this eager or she's got the "I have to impress all my bosses" new job bite. But man, she is obnoxiously eager.

I have to go to Savannah on Monday with her, it's her project and she doesn't need me, but I'm there to watch how things go. I have a lot on my plate elsewhere so I'm not thrilled.

Here's how my typical trip would go if I was alone:

-Pick a mid/late morning departure flight.
      -Rent luxury car
-Stay at Marriott or something that's at least over $140/night.
-See some sights while I'm there.
      -Eat at nice restaurants

I let the new hire plan and orchestrate the whole trip. Big mistake.

New hire: I want to get a jump start on our day monday so I got us a 6 AM flight

      Me:

New hire: I thought I'd keep costs down so I got us a Mitsubishi Mirage or similar!

      Me:

New hire: Let's stay at this La Quinta

Because I have to endorse fiscal responsibility. If I don't, and new hires are taught right off the bat that reckless spending is appropriate, it will become a problem.

Later, after good spending habits are established, I can start saying "well, let's upgrade the rental car...just this once".

There needs to be standards, man!

A decent hotel is required for business. Clean, comfortable, business center, all wi-fi, etc.

La Quinta... you're going to need a black light to know where to sleep and sit.

Nice, congrats! You're right, every bit counts. It'll add up some over the course of the year.

Thanks Don! The new annual number looks a lot better and that's kind of where it counts right now.

I'm pretty happy with myself for getting the max. I've been working my ass off between OT posts and I'm happy to see some pay off.

Welp, I am officially not a good person.

Neighbor across the street died this past sunday. It's been a week now of cars up and down the street, some parking basically on my yard. Huge house (3k sqft avg in this area is the "nice" neighborhood) and they have most people in the garage rousing it up, and have more than once woken up the kids with the noise.

This is the traditional mutual indifference level neighbors, I don't know them, have always been cordial, until their gaggle of 5 kids started playing baseball on their front stoop and were smacking tennis and baseballs into my house. Had to have words with the grandfather in the most cordial way possible, probably set it off that we're on the 'bad' list. Meh. Neighbors on both sides of me are great, no issues there, so I'm not all bad.

I want to feel bad and offer support, but... 25mph road in the town nearby, dude was the passenger and his buddy speeding along (guessing drinking as well) sideswiped a rock wall, crossed the road and smacked right into another rock wall. Car/wall 50 yards out, so there had to be some serious speed beyond the legal limit. Assuming also no seatbelts, otherwise how in a 2010 vehicle would you get dead. I want to feel bad, but I can't get past "play stupid games" and you would still be here caring for your family.

I haven't gone as far as to say or do anything, just... I feel bad that I don't feel bad.
      A loving welcome from TCL

In was the GM of a store, and a Director in a 10 rooftop group that did 400mil a year. Guess where I stayed on trips? La Quinta. Who cares. Run a business lean and the business will take care of you.

It's your business so do what you want, but running any business is like holding sand. Innocent bits get dropped here or there, and then you wonder where it all went. Be cheap top to bottom and it'll run better in the long run.

People who put "inspirational" quotes in their email signatures need to be gathered up and dumped off a cliff.
