Ever since seeing them in Zurich on vacation from the second year they came out, I have been interested in the Smart car. The whole huge price tag once it did make it over dampened my enthusiasm.

I just noticed some ads offering Smart cars for $99 dollars a month and it got my attention piqued. How are they offering $12k cars for $99 dollars a month? That sounds like the famous lease scams in the 90's. I don't really know the details of the scams except they were also $99 dollars a month and they sounded as too good to be true as this offer.

Now I know that with fees and everything like insurance, it will be about $200 a month, but that's still almost throwaway cheap. I can't see how they would make money at that rate. So the question is: What's the catch? What are they hiding?

The catch is that you'd be driving around in a death box.

A list of mods, all cars ever owned and something cribbed from a book, song and/or movie were all just here. Sorry you missed out on my unique, snowflake-like individuality.

Try to understand being offended and being right are NOT the same thing.

At 2% it would have to be a 12 year finance.

Or 5K down at 6 years still at 2%.

I doubt anyone is going to offer 2% but I just used it for an example. I really have no clue how they are offering it for so cheap. Do you have a Link to an ad?

      That is crazy cheap.

I'd entertain it if I lived in the city, but my commute is all highway now and I think I'd rather soldier on with my 240 diesel than drive this thing.

I wouldn't mind test-driving one though, just for fun.

The catch is that the 99 dollar model doesn't have air conditioning.

Want AC? 40 dollars more per month.

Depends on the area. Resale is quite good in some, not so well in others.

The REAL catch is the mileage limitation. 10k miles per year. That's not too practical for most people; but then again for a very low overall cost someone could leave one at a seasonal home and have a new car with a full warranty for 3 years and then have good fuel economy when they go to use it.

I've been aggressively shopping for a Smart; used. When everyone loses their BRAINS in about 2-3 months over rising gas prices the Smart is going to hold it's value very well.

Good plan, I would stock up on these for sure.

Also, 10,000 doesn't seem like a big deal to me, remember these are city cars.

Racked up 20K+ highway miles just in the last 6 month (I-4/I-75).
Still alive. Smart is way better highway car then W123. Normally averaging 5-10MPH over speed limit and still getting 42+ MPG.

I beat a Audi R8 away from a light in my Smart this morning, but I'm not sure he was aware it was a race.

this is funny, i just saw one of my professors driving through campus in a smart.

i think it was a brabus one though, so i guess that makes it a little less lame.

I can think of several better options if saving gas was a priority.

Nope, believe it or not they do come up at about $6k-$7k now and then. I saw a $5k one once on craigslist but it had a small amount of collision damage to the front (needed new headlight and grille).

I just hopped on cars.com real fast and put 8k as my max and this guy popped right up. Even at a bit over $7k, it's still a screaming good deal for such a low mileage vehicle.

And this one is much older of course, but the price is still great.

I agree. its a way better choice. its a great car, but I just wish they made a car people want to drive.

Did I miss something? Why is everyone calling this a deathbox? Is it really any worse than an 89 Civic with no airbags or whatever else people are driving around in?

So could I; but not for a funky cool little car with a lot of safety features and a tiny bit of cachet, less than 4 years old for under 10k. Someone who wants a Smart isn't going to cross shop a few year old Yaris, Focus, or Accent.

To be fair, people who want a Smart aren't going to cross shop at all.

$7750 is not $6k. And 67k miles is not low for a 2008. There are TONS of Smarts out there for around 8k (in the trade) with 1/3 the miles on them.

The one you posted for $6k is a 2005 grey market car; not an official import which did not begin until 2008. I wasn't extending my statement to older grey market cars.

I saw one fipped over on the highway, I think that qualifies as not safe.

Looked to me what happened was a mercedes side swipped it just barely, small dent on front right corner.
If it can be flipped that easily, it is not safe. Watched 4 guys flip the car back on it's wheels as I approached the scene in my car on the way to work lol.

I'm 6'8 and drove the old smart car at work for good 6 months before we got rid of them.

I found the fake manual transmission jerk to be annoying, but other than that it was a perfect city car.

My gf is considering getting one, she commutes 6km each way, all city. It's almost cheaper than a monthly transit pass which costs 98$.

Hey, isn't that the one with the CDI(diesel)? It has fancier headlights than the Canadian version though???

Where did this one come from???

Hmm, that works out to about $145 a month once you factor in the $999 down payment and $350 turn-in fee. I might have to go down and take a look at these at that price.

That is about $100 less than buying a Fiesta or Mazda 2 or something (5 year term w/ $0 down).
