A new, ultra-modern four-cylinder FSI engine with a displacement of 1.8 litres and turbocharger can now be ordered for the Audi A3 and A3 Sportback. The 1.8 TFSI signals the market debut of a new family of engines and combines the evolution of the TFSI concept with an entirely new basic engine.

The TFSI concept brings together the advantages of petrol direct injection and turbocharging. This innovative technology paves the way for superior road performance and greater dynamism using less fuel and with reduced emissions. With its output of 118 kW (160 bhp) and high peak torque of 250 Nm, it constitutes a powerful basis for sporty driving pleasure.

Audi's engineers have demonstrated the effectiveness of FSI technology in combination with turbocharging not only on racetracks around the world, but also in the guise of the much-acclaimed 2.0 TFSI engine. This concept has been systematically refined for the new 1.8 TFSI. The injection pressure, increased to 150 bar, and the new six-hole injectors guarantee highly homogeneous mixture preparation and extremely efficient combustion.

The integrated turbocharger and a new engine management system bring a further improvement in responsiveness and help the torque to build up even more smoothly. The peak torque of 250 Nm is available across a very wide engine speed range extending from just 1,500 rpm all the way to 4,200 rpm. The entirely new basic engine is designed with an eye to high refinement and low vibrations in particular. The 1.8 TFSI consequently redefines the standard in its class for output, torque and also acoustic behaviour. Its concept makes it suitable for a very broad performance range.

The new high-tech Audi engine is available initially in the A3 and A3 Sportback, both in combination with the six-speed manual gearbox and with the optional S tronic, the dual-clutch gearbox for lightning-fast gearshifts without any perceptible interruptions to the flow of power.

With a top speed of 220 km/h and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in 7.8 seconds for the 3-door A3 with S tronic, the 1.8 TFSI ensures supreme performance. In the A3 with manual gearbox, the combined fuel consumption is a mere 7.3 litres per 100 km.
The basic price of the A3 1.8 TFSI Attraction with 6-speed manual gearbox is EUR 23,500 (incl. 19 percent VAT). The first vehicles will be available in January 2007.

Will North America see this motor anytime soon? But more than 160 hp of course

I realize Audi would need to go through an expensive driveline certification process...

Economy for the rest of the world. Not everybody needs 200hp. I doubt this would make it to the US.

i'd have to agree. you know the europeans have many, many more choices wen it comes to preparing new cars. this month, for instance, bmw is releasing 32 new model configurations in their lineup. i bet we may eventually see it in something like tve eos after it's been out a year or so. if they need to boost sales (i think it's a little pricey for how many they want to sell) it might be a good way to do it. the cabriolets did fine with the 2.slow for years. the engine isn't always a priority for that market.

Maybe it could replace the 2.5. Slightly better HP: 160 vs. 150. 250 Nm translates to 184 lb-ft of torque vs. the 2.5l's 170. A nice little 10HP, 14 lb-ft bump. They tout the acoustic improvement which is one of the 2.5l's weaknesses. And I'll bet the fuel efficiency is great.

On the other hand, how does it compare to the outgoing 1.8t? Looks like better low-end torque - probably more responsive, more efficient.

Exactly! When my German relatives visit me they can't believe I'm driving the 200hp A3. To them that's unheard of. If any of them were ever shopping for a VAG product, anything over 180hp would not be a consideration. It would be either a diesel or most economical 4 banger available. And these folks don't have money issues...just want the most bang for their euro when paying those gas prices there.

I wasn't chipped when they visited last summer but told them I was going to. That too is unheard of. You have 200 pferdestarke and you want more HP?? Unglaublich...

I just guessed and figured it meant "not very glaublich."
2010 Golf TDI: Silver, DSG, 4-dr, cold WX package, Bluetooth, sunroof, body side moldings, deep rubber mats.

Mods: Not looking to do much to this car. Pretty nice as is! Blacked out the grill. Thinking about blacking out the rear emblem and badges.

Off topic - I see your address. I lived in Bowie/Crofton/Piney Orchard for 25 years. How's the VAG scene up there these days?

This engine is a perfect replacement for 2.0FSI 150hp in European and Asian markets.
