With events like this morning’s grand opening of the Audi Forum New York City, it’s no surprise that the Audi brand is the talk of the town. Audi AG board member Ralph Weyler quoted the headline of the most recent issue of Autocar magazine, describing the Ingolstadt-based marque as ‘one of the hottest brands in the market’. No surprise then that the opening of a brand forum in the heart of one of the hottest cities is done in grand style.

When the guy jumped in to move the R8 into the cueing area to move into the building, I was so tempted to ask for a ride.

The Auto Union and the R8 will remain in the forum for about a month, so you can still check them out at the corner of Park and 47th.

That R8 will do well I can feel it. It's a brilliant piece that looks expensive but is not stupidly extreme sports car styled. The Audi Forum is a neat idea. I'd visit the next time I'm in NYC.
Thanks for the great number of superb photos! Love the LED headlamps from afar on the R8. Cool vintage racer. The A8L blue on yellow/light interior is rich, and the S4-like bright blue S6 outside is hot-hot-hot.
The event looked to be a great success!

If Audi has upscale aspirations of perception for North America, they can't get vehicles like the R8 here quick enough.

The cool thing about the Forum is it's pretty central. 47th intersects with Times Square. Walk East, and it's probably about 10 blocks, maybe 15 minutes walk if you hit the Walk signs right. So, if you're doing the tourist thing, it's not a terribly intricate trip, and if you walk up 48th, you go right past Rockefeller Center. Catch a taping of the Today show, and then make sure to hit the Exoticar model car showroom in the building at 48th and Park. That makes it even more worth the walk. They sell some Euro mags as well like Auto Motor und Sport.

It totally stole the show, though the R8 is looking hot. I wish I could have heard that Auto Union...what a spectacle!

I'm glad to see this triumphant commitment to the US market, but can I please have a US pricing sheet for the R8 now? Or did I miss it?

Brilliant.I've always thought it was interesting that audi calls their buyers "clients" and VW calls them "customers" in owners manuals that are nearly identitcal.

Amazing... Love the photos!

RS4 figures are readily available in the brochures for it and its unlaiden weight is 1,650kg which is 3,638lbs when you round the resultant conversion figure up.
R8 figures as published to their dealerships in the UK say the unlaiden weight is 1,560kgs which is 3,439lbs when you round the resultant conversion figure down.
This means the R8 will tip the scales at only 199lbs less than the RS4.
Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see Audi say the weight figures are wrong for the R8 and that actually it will only tip the scales at a mere 1423.5kgs ... which really would have the R8 weigh in at 500lbs less than the RS4 ... and when taking into consideration how careful Audi have been with the information released on the R8, I can't see this being the case.I hope this doesn't dampen your enthusiasm for the R8.

The 500 pounds less comes from the RS4 being heavier over on this side of the pond. Sucks to be an American!I think the RS4 weighs a bit over 3900 lbs over here, or maybe just short.
We're hoping that the R8 doesnt have to swell up in weight for its trip to the USA.
It will be fun when Audi has the momentum to build a 'lightweight' version of the R8 - minimal interior, stripped out luggage area, etc.

I didn't realise the RS4 put so much weight on when it travelled over the water ... I hope for your sakes over there in the US that the R8 doesn't have so many weight issues by the time it leaves the showrooms in the states!
I wonder if they changed the gearing for the US version of the RS4 to keep those 0-62mph times down ... or if the guys testing the 0-62mph times for a US magazine review were in Europe testing an RS4 without the extra weight?
Regardless I would have liked to see the R8 come in somewhat lighter than it actually has done. I mean, if you can build a high performance family sedan ... which is essentially what the RS4 is ... I would have thought that using ASF and lightweight construction techniques ... Audi could have made a two seater mid-engined sports car a bit lighter than they actually have done ... after all, the engine and much of the running gear will be remarkably similar in weight ... so losing two seats and the weight and bulk required to accomodate up to three more people would have resulted in more than 200lbs being lost ... how wrong I seem to be!

I think Audi is making some stuff up.Horsepower and weight. Under and over stating reality.
Maybe they are playing a trick on us.........and Lambo..... and Porsche... etc.- Make a splash with the launch, get everyone excited, but give them some things to chew on... horsepower, weight, performance, PRICE.... and then slowly let the truth come out via the press.... more power, less weight, more pricey, etc.
...and i havent been drinking.

I could definitely believe that Audi are sandbagging a bit with the numbers on the R8. The guy at the show I spoke to said that the 3,400Ibs (or 1542kg) weight quoted was with all fluids, including the 75 litre fuel tank. I thought manufacturers usually quoted dry weights, so that's at least 100kg (220Ibs) straight away.Certainly Autocar in the UK tested the RS4 at 1714KG (3780Ibs), which I think was with half a tank of fuel (not sure!) - anyway suggests even in Europe the weight difference on the road could be more like 170-200kg.
Also, given I read somewhere that both the inlet and exhaust on the engine are freer flowing than on the RS4 installation, I don't see how they can be quoting the exact same output.
This may be wishful thinking, but I'd like to think they are keeping it further away from a Gallardo on paper, but rather less so on the road!

Nice to see Bloomberg hanging with the Audi brand.

Hope they weren't looking to fuel up the R10 TDI in Manhattan. Gas stations are tough enough to find on the Island and diesel is even more of a b!tch.![]()

Hey, I've never even heard of this "forum" in NYC? What do they have there? I live like 30 min away, and I'm sort of interested in going. Is it like an auto museum?
