I amagine its permanent because there is no switch on the dash between 4WD and 2WD. It doesn't mean all 4 wheels are always applying power. Even Subaru doesn't imply that! Whether there is electronic control such as an active differential or a purely mechanical center differential doesn't really matter these days does it? The majority of folks who buy these cars have no idea how they work.
In any case, what's wrong with "just haldex"?
