Escorted by bodyguards like a superstar, it fulfilled its first official engagement in front of hundreds of media representatives: the Audi Q7, the prototype of a new SUV generation, put in a surprise appearance at the "quattro Night" on February 21, 2005 when it rolled onto the piazza of the Audi Forum in Ingolstadt.

A fitting highlight to celebrate the 25th anniversary of quattro permanent four-wheel drive: because together with the top athlete Audi RS4, the multi-talented Q7 with off-road capabilities symbolises the wide-ranging talents of quattro technology. Both superlative driveability on asphalt and optimum traction off the beaten track are characteristic features of the once-revolutionary drive concept that has since been installed on production models an incredible 1.8 million times.

The production version of the "Pikes Peak quattro" study will appear on the market at the start of 2006 in the guise of the Audi Q7. High-performance petrol and TDI engines will then guarantee excellent road performance; quattro permanent four-wheel drive and the cutting-edge suspension will translate it into optimum grip and maximum driving pleasure on any terrain.

Until it makes its international exhibition debut at the 2005 Frankfurt Motor Show, all further appearances of the Q7 will take place exclusively behind closed doors. Over the next few months, Q7 prototypes will be undergoing intensive tests in the toughest conditions imaginable, including in Arctic regions and burning deserts: proving grounds to guarantee a successful production launch.

I love how they make like it's some sort of rally car. Dudes! It's going to be driven by affluent soccer moms! If it's EVER in opposite lock it'll be while the driver is screaming in terror!

Ah yes! They both have angular headlights! Good find!

Although with that comparison I did notice how ugly the side mirrors on the Q7 are.

mirrors look massive on that thing... how many people want all SUVs to die? anyone? show of hands!

It was bad enough when BMW gave its customers 2 SUVs to parade around in, I dont want to think about greenwich audi-moms driving that thing

    x2

I'd say maybe 30 or 40% of all CL posts are rants about how car X looks just like car Y

(ok, an exaggeration, maybe only 25%)

they still share similarities as a whole. if you compare the the Audi to
    ,
then they have nothing in common. This is not saying who's copying who, this is to say that cars do look alike, damnit.

As paskal mentioned, the angle of the headlamps are similiar, and if you want to get really anal, the outline of the grille openings are also close.....but in both cases, the size and execution are completely unique.

    The DLO's are different.
The surfacing on the side is different.
The intersection points of both the A and D pillars with the beltline is different.
The sufacing on the hood is different.
    The rockers are different.
    The front lower is different.
    The jewelery is different.
The surfacing around the wheel archs is different.

    .....need I go on?

I gotta agree. For Audi designs typically being crisp and angular, those mirrors look like they've been lifted straight of a 1997 Ford F150.

The front is still disguised. There is black tape between the lights and grill and the bottom half of the grill is covered up.

Yeah, you're right. Lets hope they stick to much larger, worse handling, Expeditions and Escalades

I'd much rather park next to a Cayenne/Touareg clone than another Suburban or Escalade At the very least, these trucks aren't anymore infringing than a Lexus RX300 or ML350. It think it's the perfect size for an "urban use" SUV.

While I agree that Greenwich is a SUV-seller's paradise, at least be accurate...you see very few Expeditions and Escalades here...

The Suburban/Envoy twins (not Escalade) are the most popular, with the Explorer (not Expedition) and Lexus RX very strong as well; you also see plenty of the BMW X5, various Land Rovers, the big Toyota SUV, the Merc SUVs, various Jeeps, some Touaregs and Cayennes and XC90s, not many of the Infinitis, Hummers, or Caddy SUVs.
