Lelystad, Holland - A few weeks ago, Porsche produced a fantastic performance with the Carrera GT, beating the three-year old lap record at the famous Nordschleife Nürburgring. The Nordschleife is considered to be one of the toughest circuits in the world which is used by various manufacturers for testing new prototypes. November 24th, however, Donkervoort broke up the Porsche party in the cruellest of fashions. The brand from Lelystad smashed the record set by the German supercar by no less than 15 seconds. This performance means that Donkervoort has genuinely earned the title ‘fastest production car on the Nürburgring Nordschleife’. Driver Michael Düchting was presented with the trophy by the organisers.

to me this doesn't really mean much...when a car is purpose built for one task and will see EXTREMELY LIMITED production it really isn't a production car in my mind.
this car seems to be a racecar that was made street legal solely to beat the record... granted the Carrera GT is by no means a grocery getter it still a true production car that can be sold to the masses (to an extent).
VB is getting better...

I wouldn't be surprised to find out that this car is built in about the same #'s as the Carrerra GT, I agree that this is a street legal race car, but the GT is too. This is just a way to show that HP is important, but weight has about the same importance. Imagine a Lotus Elise with a 1.8T engine? or a 2.0TFsi!!!!!

now THAT would be the ultimate daily driver.

i'd be curious to see the production numbers...i suppose i'm biased or something but when i think production car i guess i think of one made by a large company that builds more than one model. hell, porsche is considered a "small" company in the auto industry; one of these mom and pop shops turning out a car that i can't go down and check out a dealer (unless i live in holland) doesn't necessitate "production" in my mind.
VB is getting better...

I agree about the production thing...but if it technically meets all the requirements - then so be it. I'd be interested in some numbers.However...getting around the Ring that fast is damn impressive regardless of the car.
Now, just toss a 2.0TFSI in there...

Well, I realize that it's not exactly an AWP 1.8T powering that thing. I also realize that the phenominal performance aroundt he track comes equally from the car's feather-weight and perfected suspension. But still, the core of that engine is the same thing in my GTI. And I take pride in that.
Who said the 1.8T sucks and is a thing of the past? Not quite.![]()

A Lotus 7 styled car with 1.8T power - awesome! If anyone checked out the website, they have had a string of these over the years. Looks like they are using the VW motor now. Now I know what kind of track car to buy when I win the lottery!

lol, 1.8t owns.......in a car that probably wieghs about 1500lbs.....
seriosly though the carrera gt beating the gt2 is not that big of a suprise, the gt2 996 is absolutley a fabulous car, one of the best ever produced by porsche. Most supercars have fantastic numbers, however due to sheer size and manuverability tend to loose out to smaller cars like the gt2, I think the 911 is really the best sports car ever, in terms of history, accomplishments, and overall driving charecteristics.
The case about the tiny tube frame car from the german manufacturer is weak though, building a car for one purpose makes it much much easier to achieve something like this. Take into consideration all the factors that porsche had to deal with with the carrerra gt, airbags, driveability, air con, stereo system, crash saftey standards, reliability, warrenty etc etc.
Where a smaller company can simple take a tube frame chassis, bolt in a tuned 1.8t motor put some sheet metal in to make a cocoon, and then tune out the suspension, and there you go, a car that can romp around a track, but one that simply cannot do anything on the road.
This is why in a lot of comparisions in English car magazines cars like the caterham 7 are considered only again cars like themselves. They are sunday raceday cars, and nothing more. They are an absolute joy to drive and to own, fun as hell around anything, but still essentially a go cart with zero everyday usability.
Somehow the term production car reallly does not fit these types of cars, sure they may be mass produced, up to a certain number mind you because of crash standards, saftey, airbags, etc. But in my mind the carrerra gt is still king of the ring, right ahead of the gt2,

Ok why on ear is no one talking about how god aweful those piss poor excuses for doors are?Love the car... but I'd have to rip those doors off with a quickness..
My wife's old jeep wrangler had more solid doors.

if that's the only thing that you are worried about on that car, then you really aren't taking things into perspective.......
anyway the doors are there simply as a wind buffer, you probably sit about 4" below the door and are braced in with an aluminum tube frame of the chassis.
not like a wrangler when the door is the only thing blocking you from falling out of the car

that's exactly my point.. they really serve no purpose.. I'm not worried about them being flimsy and me not being safe.. I'm more annoyed with the fact that they are ugly, and I could just do without them altogether.. I think they ruin the lines of an otherwise cool looking car..(i.e. it's cool looking the in way that the BMW M-Coupe is cool looking... not really attractive, but it still attracts you..)
