With a new design and a more extensive equipment specification, the top sports model in the A4 range, the S4 with supremely powerful 344 bhp V8 engine, is about to be launched. Its permanent quattro four-wheel drive and consistently sport-tuned aluminium suspension ensure that this power can be converted into maximum forward propulsion and driving pleasure. The new S4, like its predecessor, is available in both saloon and Avant versions.

The S models of the new A4 generation are likewise instantly recognisable: the front end is dominated by the new face of the brand, the single-frame grille – in this case with S-specific grid pattern – and newly styled headlights. The shoulder line sculpts the sides of the car body in a most eye-catching way. And, finally, the most prominent feature on the new tail end, apart from the newly styled light units, are four oval tailpipes on both saloon and Avant models – a clear indication of just what the Audi S4 is capable of.

I'm starting to like the new exterior, though I still prefer the original three spoke steering wheel which looked a lot cleaner.

Wonder if those sport seats will be available here - I doubt it knowing Audi (guy from Audi of America tried to explain how they bargain with Germany on what options to bring over to North America).

      0-62mph in 5.6 seconds? I hope that's ridiculously conservative...

    6. 09-07-2004 10:10 AM #6
      That is very conservative. ;-)

While it's fresh, I'm VERY happy I bought my B6 when I did. I just think it's so drop dead sexy. The B7 looks like a cross between a Volvo and Acura TL from the front, and it's all Acura TL from the side and rear. Too bad....

Wow. Very ugly and sedate looking. A big letdown.

    8. 09-07-2004 10:59 AM #8
Very uninspiring IMHO. Looks like a BMW front with a Saturn body. Very conservative especially for an S.

    9. 09-07-2004 11:22 AM #9
Not liking the front, rear, or the dash layout... Ive never liked the new audi grille layout, rear tails remind me of a civic for some reason and the dash just looks all wrong...

The B5 S4 will always have my vote. Audi got it right with the look on that and even more so bringing the b5 to perfection with the RS4...

Just imagine how ugly that is gonna look with an american license plate...

    11. 09-07-2004 12:54 PM #11
Not feeling the front, but the rear is OK. I'm not sure about this new styling direction that Walter DaSilva is leading Audi.

I'll be keeping my B6S4 for a while....

Remember the evening when Audi AG announced B6 A4 back in October 00, I had to stay up late in order to read all the press release, specs and pics even on the night before my Marketing 203 mid-term exam. Thank god that was an open book exam.

Sorry, but the dash layout (save for the new wheel) is exactly the same as the B6...

Thankfully, it's better than the non-S A4 (thanks to the Avus wheels, lowered suspension, and significantly improved front airdam), but it cann't hold a candle to the beautiful B6 S4.

You can pick on other difference, like wooden automatic shift knobs for Multitronic and Tiptronic.

didn't the present S4 only come out like a year ago?

Oh well. 1st the Golf now this. I can't say that I'm crazy about the direction that VW and Audi have gone with their latest cars. I can always hope the Acura TL comes in 4 wheel drive when I'm in the market for a new car in a few years.

Sorta a random thought (but not really):

I bet the S4 Avant will be the best looking B7 money can buy...as it will have the better wagon rear-end (as opposed to the weird sedan rear end) and, as an S car, it'll have the better S4 grill/wheels/suspension...

And the whole design is growing on me a bit...I don't think I'll ever find it as attractive as the B6, but then I think it's a lot more unique and bold as a tradeoff, while the B6 is the epitome of "safe" styling.

Im not a huge fan on audis new body style, the current S4 is a great car im not sure how the new one compares, it, but i would rather have an M3 anyday of the week.

    23. 09-07-2004 10:38 PM #23
      definitely very TL looking....
I'm surprised that they came out with the B7 so soon. The B5's run was from '96 to '02. The B6 came out in '02, and is now done in '05??
By the looks of this car, it's more like a B6.5 .

By the time it comes out, B7 will be an 06. So 4-year mid-life revision is on par with Audi's usual life cycle. Keep in mind B6 came out in Europe in 01.

Actually, the B6 was introducted in Europe in October 2000, and in September 2001 for North America. Although not entirely new, I think Audi felt the significant chassis modifications (note S4-derived components) and nearly all-new sheetmetal justified the change to a B7 designation.

I think that the new 3-series had a lot to do with bringing the B7 up ayear. The question now will be if the B7 will stay a year longer than planed or will the B8 be moved since the B7 was moved.

I think this car will look very good in person, the A6 looked good in pictures but looks very diferent and a lot better in the flesh.

The engines are great and when the S4 get's FSI things will look even better.

I think Audi will make the B7 stays a year longer than B6, simply because it addresses the single most complaint of B6: power. With 200hp 2.0T and 255hp 3.2FSI, these 2 engines are good enough to win comparos and A4's styling is timeless enough to substain itself through another 4 years of life cycle. I am sure Audi already working on upgrading the performance of these 2 engines for B8 4 years down the road.

I wonder if that thought will ever cross my mind in regards to the grille.
IMHO, it's horrible that Audi has decided upon this grille for their entire line up.
Kinda like Audi hired their own version of Chris Bangle?

Audi could talk all day about the "visual link" to the Nuvolari concept car and the Auto Union GP cars... but I still think it's ugly and paradoxically, IMHO, it doesn't reflect their own street car design lineage.

Admittedly, I've ended up liking design aspects that initially I had trouble coming to grips with, like how I felt about the rear tails on the Mk 2 GTI when it was first introduced. Somehow, though... I don't think that's gonna happen with the new grille. It's just too overbearing.

I'm bummed, 'cuz I've always lusted after a 1st gen S3.... and now that the A3 is finallyavailable here (even though it's only the 5 door), it just has to have the new family grille.
Even the new Mk5 GTI has a weird "waterfall" type grille.

Whenever my hand will be forced into buying a "new" car, it's sure looking like it's going to be a used one. Or, perhaps the aftermarket will come to the rescue of the new Audi line and the MK5 with some cleaned up front bumper caps &/or grille assemblies? That would be cool, especially since I clearly recognize the new models' improvements under the skin.

The B7 will be here January/February 2005, so it will likely remain a 2005 model, like the 2001 B5/B5.5 Passats.

    32. 09-10-2004 12:21 AM #32
someone should get a hold of who's designing the car and tell them the FRONT LOOKS SOOO UGLY!!! every1 that says they like the new look is really lieing to themselves, seriously wtf is up with the front, eww 04 S4* looks sooo much cleaner

    33. 09-10-2004 01:31 AM #33
Wow, what are the designers at VAG thinking? First the Mk 5 golfs and now the S4, what a let down.

Yuck. I hate it. At least it's better than the plain old new A4.
