Holy crap that thing is expensive. Why does it cost so much and is that the only other crank there is for the VR6?? Just a question. Thanx.

how do you machine a crank to increase stroke? when you machine something, typically it becomes smaller. unlees you know some magic machine shop.
You could increase the stroke of the factory crankshaft up to 40 mils by electrolizing the rod journals and then re grinding them on a base circle 20 mils oversize.

Who makes a bearing made for different journal sizes, i thought thats one of the reasons of a vr bearing goes bad and scores the crank its junk, simply beacuse no one made oversized bearings.
OK here is the skinny on the ABT crank.
This is what ABT told me when we used to import from them. ABT gets the crank from the oem foundry that does them for VW. They are raw un cut casting and that is why both ABT and VW markings appear on them They are ground with the same crank journals, and same rod journals as a stock 90.3mm VR6 crank but at 95.6mm.
Yes, oem rods would work provided that you offset the stroke by lowering the pin height of the pistons by 2.65mm. What ABT did was shave oem cast pistons and remachine them to adjust for the increased stroke, we did overbore (83mm) forged parts instead.
BTW, the only way you could regrind the oem 90.3mm crank would be to weld it then re-grind it. In fact, in 1996 we sent a VR6 crank to a well known US crank and rod manufacturer (I won't mention any names but it sounds a lot like...Power). Our hope was to have the oem crank welded and reground to be able to offer this reground version at a far lower cost than the ABT part. We heard nothing for almost 2 years and then one day we got it back in 1998 with a note telling us they couldn't help us that it was too complex. (Jeez, thanks)

is there anyone out there with pics of this crank where u can see the part #'s and codes?
i'd love to know what kind of crank this is. all i was told was that it was a fully balanced racing crank , and that when it was purchased it was over $2000. if anyone has further info on the infamous abt crank please let me know.
WoW. D_Bat was my old username. Still got it but dont use it. talk about bringing up the past man. This post is from 3 years back. Heh. Any ways. I almost sent them the money for their GSB crank when they were getting that going. Glad I didn't. They were all the rave though for a year or so.
